Whickwithy- I'm sort of amazed you've never heard of Boston England, it's the home of your founding fathers, and Boston US was named after it? At the risk of sounding like a teacher, if you want more info I'll happily provide. There is a memorial on the estuary and great views of The Stump, St Botolphs Church, which was the tallest building in England for many many years. And big skies.
  • I'm shocked!  I'm honestly shocked.  How could I not know that!!?!?  I mean, in most cases, I'm a rather knowledgeable guy.  I've got to ask around, now, and see if I've just got this weird blind spot.
  • Whickwithy - You might want to have a look at these 2 sites if youre interested -

    Do come visit sometime!

Hey WW. If I remember from driving about there last year, a good number of your towns (why do you always refer to them as city's? Even the smallest places have this designation) are named after towns from around the SouthEast and East Anglian region of England. I remember a Braintree (near us in Essex) an Ipswich ( just over the border in Suffolk) as well as many, many others. Suggest you Google a map of the East of England and see just how many people came over and set up communities in the states in the North East corner of the USA and reused the names of where they had come from. Yarmouth is another. Funny how they were all escaping religious persecution but renamed their towns after ones in the old country.
It's about now we start a conversation about Squanto !

  • You mean like this, UT?  This is a sign in Maine.  We seem to like country names as much as town names.  I think the problem may be that we ran out of interesting country names.  I feel so cosmopolitan.

I will, Kat, one of these days.  I'm afraid it will be awhile, yet, though.

Yes, we do. In line with our Goth image, he is jet black, red leather collar with studs. He is a black labrador retriever called Dakota ( Raffles unofficially as his slight of paw and ability to snaffle things is without peer). A tall dog and all muscle as he is a proper retriever and loves carrying things around in his mouth. He is from a line called Drakeshead. He runs like a greyhound. Here is a picture of the scamp ! image

  • Aw very cute pooch UT. I'm getting very fed up now cos I'd love to upload pics on various threads, but I STILL can't figure it out, despite reading about it on the FAQ thread etc. Is there no way to upload pics from Dropbox? How do you upload your pics to the net so they have an URL?! I have my head in the clouds all the time, but not That One- how do I get pics on The ( flipping) Cloud? Grrr...

    Is it just me? :-S

Ps that is not a studded collar. I'm not buying it- you're not scaring me you know.
  • Ps. I haven't even got to grips with the damn photocopier at work yet...and I spend approx 6.5 hours a day on it! ( well it feels that way)
  • The studs are around the back. Would be interested to know how others do their posting on the board. I generally use an IPad. I can post, as I am doing now, but cannot post pictures from an IPad. For this, I have to use a PC or Mac. I took Halloween Jacks advice and converted my browser to Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, as I.E. would not play ball with pictures at all. I upload all my pictures I want to post to my Flickr account, which is a free account (Flickr.co.uk). Once they are on here, you can then copy the URL from the picture and then upload to a GMB thread using the icon that looks a bit like a TV screen 3 to the right of the emoticons symbol.
Suggest you cough up what you use on the internet (no, not via the webcam ;) ) that is the browser you use and consider a Flickr account and then we can talk you through it.
How do others do it (post picture - keep it clean, this is a family board ) :))

  • Yes, help with pic-uploading can be had here.. it is a bit of a pain not being able to directly load them to the forum (as we could do on the old board). Dropbox.. hmm, I'm not sure that will work.. anyone use it enough to know whether it provides a URL (ie web address) for an individual picture file?
As Urbs* says, it will work fine with pictures on flickr. Also facebook, twitter instagram etc. (I have my own domain/webspace to which I can upload any pics, but I'm aware many won't have that)

    * or is UT the abbrev of preference?

  • I tried from Dropbox and it did not work. Mind you, that was in the bad old I.E. days.
I will let Igor out of his cupboard Kat R and conduct some experiments on your behalf.

  • Much obliged. But if I do get to grips with the picky uploading thing, well, you might regret it...zzzzzzz I'll get the Hobnobs out then y'all can settle down to a nice little tour through the family album lol
  • Kat, keep in mind that the silly little box that you have to copy your URL into already has the "http" beginning of an address in it.  If you don't remove it, or copy over it, or something, it will never work.
