The bacterium that causes tetanus can run rife in the non-sterilized manure of any animal. Still, I'd be more concerned with the spread of hepatitis or e-coli.

I meant to respond to this earlier, PG. It's actually vitamin C (aka ascorbic acid) that acts as a catalyst in the breakdown of sodium benzoate and the subsequent formation (or release) of benzene. The effect of citric acid on sodium benzoate is unknown. Fortunately for partakers of certain soda drinks, sodium (or disodium) EDTA somehow hinders that process. There isn't adequate evidence of benzene, itself, causing cancer in such minute amounts. However, it is a fairly powerful solvent and can dissolve the outer coatings of various parasitic entities that would otherwise remain dormant in or pass through the human system.
